How to create a participatory guarantee that values the work of small producers in favor of the conservation of Biodiversity?

January 2019

We bring together 25 organizations from Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco that range from producers at different levels of maturity to urban and rural consumers, distributors, academics, environmentalists, and various institutions. To this end, participatory workshops were held in different regions of the southeast to work on a strategy that would value the Biodiversity-Friendly Attribute in the market.

The action model consisted of three premises:

  1. Identify the essence of Biodiversity Friendly in different environments to define a differentiating concept in the market.

  2. Establish an architecture by: productive system, audiences and types of product or service.

  3. Define the communication strategy and its translation into communication pieces

The result was a strategy that addresses multiple audiences while positioning the value of the Biodiversity Friendly attribute as a conscious consumption movement.  create a differential within a growing environment of ecological and organic products to highlight the attribute for the market of 6 Productive Systems in Mexico: coffee, cocoa, honey, silvopastoral, forestry and ecotourism.

The system that was developed was visually attractive and applicable in rural and traditional contexts, as well as in premium markets to characterize products and services with Biodiversity Friendly practices. This earned us the A'Design Award in the Strategy & Meta Design category, Italy, 2019.

IMPACT

A new category of products was developed that is in the process of becoming an environmental certification. 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_

This market differentiation strategy considers its different levels as the strategy management manual at the inter-ministerial level and implementation guides by production system for Producers' Associations._cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b- 136bad5cf58d_

Development organizations such as GIZ have integrated Biodiversity-Friendly practices as mandatory in their calls for resource allocation.
